Trust.

It's a funny thing.  You can't gain it unless you've already given it yourself.  Sounds like a riddle or something.  Look, I don't even know where I'm going with this.  I think I've just realized that a lot of you guys really don't trust me.  And why would you?  You know nothing about me, other than the fact that I work for The Boss, I'm a hacker, and I report on deaths.  I guess it's time to open up a bit more.

I'm 27 years old.  Just under six feet tall.  Light brown eyes, dark brown shaggy hair.  No beard or mustache.  Thin.  Used to be about 150 lbs. before taking this job.  Now I'm closer to 140.  I'm eating about the same, so I guess it's the stress.  No, you don't get a name or location other than "America," at least not yet.  That's for my own safety.

I grew up in...well, I'm still in the same general part of the States, so I'm not going to give you any specifics, but I grew up in a decent home.  Parents never split, but they worked pretty hard, so I spent a lot of time alone.  On top of that, I lived in a small town (I'm in a bigger city now), and there isn't much to do in small towns.  So I became a black hat hacker, just as a hobby to fill time.  I ended up getting pretty good at it.  Not good enough that the government got suspicious, but good enough that I could do quite a bit of damage to an unsuspecting site.  Not that I ever did that, though.  At least not to any sites that didn't deserve it.  As for an actual job, I'm working with the IT department of my Alma Mater.  Well, at least I was.

Started working just about a month or two ago.  I'm actually pretty new to all of this.  I first heard of him in...late February I think?  Wasn't too terribly long.  So yeah, the first time I saw him, I made a deal with the devil, but sometimes there are things worth selling your soul for.  Unsatisfactory, yeah, but I'm not quite willing to share yet.

As for what I do, well, I guess you already know.  I read blogs, for one thing, and do some research on them.  More importantly, I work on hacking blogs in case deaths need reporting.  And, of course, I report the deaths.  It's really not much, but it apparently helps, because I'm still here.

That's me, I guess.  Hope you all trust me a bit more that I've opened up some.

  1. The question here, Messenger, is... what is it you want with our trust? What do you need it for? Because, no matter how nice of a guy you are, I'd still want to know why someone who openly works for your Boss is attempting to garner the trust of runners.

  2. It's more for me than anything else. I have a hard time trusting you guys, too. And since I don't really trust The Boss or my coworkers, that sort of isolates me a bit. This is me opening up in an attempt to get the things that really matter out of my system.

  3. Well you don't really need trust to do that; you just do what you've been doing. Asking for trust implies that you might eventually ask more of us than just to listen.

  4. I don't really do trust, sorry.

    I'm a great listener, though?

  6. You must not know who I am then Schrödinger...
You really need to enjoy your job a bit more Mr. Funeral.

  7. Yeah, Messy! You know, you really need to get out more and loosen up a bit. Let's go hunt down some runners and kill them tonight. Put the 'fun' back in 'funeral!'

I seriously don't know who you're trying to address this to. I mean, I trust you well enough, and it sounds like they trust you well enough. Unless there's something you're not telling me about.

Is it Steve? I bet it's Steve. That asshole.

  8. Hmm. Seems to me that you're either trying to gain our trust in order to stab us in the backs.

Of course, I could be totally wrong and you could be genuine, but I think it's best to assume the worst, especially when the stakes are so high.

  9. I know, right, Dante? Messy's the best. So you want me to sneak around and stab them in the back while they're distracted, or do you want to do it yourself?

Oh, this is just great! I've gotta tell Poe the good news! Our little boy is growing up so fast!

Nah, I'm just ribbing you all. Messy's as gutless as Steve (just finished eviscerating Steve, by the way). I doubt that's what he's up to. But maybe I don't give him enough credit. Maybe he is just trying to gain trust to betray you. Or is he?

Damn, now I don't know myself.

  10. Caper, if you're going to be using my computer behind my back, at least give me your fucking story and not some bullshit about how you watched Marble Hornets half a dozen years ago and have been stalked ever since.

And who says that I'm even talking to any of you? There are a certain few people upset about me straddling the fence, and I suppose they have a right to be. I'm not trying to gain their trust. There's nothing I can do to gain their trust at this point. No, I'm talking mostly to myself. I need to share my story to...get things off of my mind a bit.

I could care less about whether you trust me or not. The ones I'm talking to, though...they'll know.

  11. We should trust you because.. you gave us a vague backstory? You're too trusting yourself.
