Getting to Know Nee-chan

Well, now that she's all settled in, I've gotten the chance to know Nee-chan a bit better.  I'm still not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

But first things first.  An update on the situation with Poe.  She posted a eulogy for Caper (which is definitely worth reading), and I left her a comment saying that, if she needed a friend, I'd be here for her.  It's in her hands now, not mine.  And I'm thinking that she probably just wants to be alone, as I haven't heard anything from her that you haven't.  Also, she has updated her blog since then, and she said something about needing a new partner, so maybe that's why Jacob didn't put her in a room with me.

And speaking of Jacob, I still need to elaborate on him more sometime.  I've given him a call, and he's agreed to meet me in person (I've never actually met him), so I'll let you know more about him then.

And now, on to Nee-chan.  Nee-chan, Nee-chan, Nee-chan.  Yeah.  Let me just say that, when I signed up for this, I never expected to have to deal with background noise from a show with a name as gay as Princess Tutu.  Good lord, this girl has her dumb Japanese cartoons on the TV nonstop.  And for some reason, she never watches them in English.  It's always Japanese with the subtitles.  Why the hell would you watch a show in a language you don't speak when they have one in a language you do speak (yes, I know that they have English versions)?  On the other hand, while Nee-chan (fuck it, I'm going to call her Nee.  But not to her face) clearly doesn't speak Japanese, she sure as hell pretends to, with all the "kuwai" and "desu" and "aregato" that she throws around.  Oh, yeah, and then there's the fact that she refers to The Boss as "Slendy-kun."  I'm not entirely sure what that means, but she says it so affectionately.  Affection?  For The Boss?  What the hell?  He's not exactly a huggy person from what I've seen and heard of him.  And the plushie.  She's always carrying the plushie around, holding it by one arm (or tentacle, usually) like some kid carrying around a blanket or a teddy bear.  It creeps me out.  Like something like The Boss shouldn't look cute like that.

But anyway.  Enough about the irritations.  She's bubbly and annoying, but it's not that terrible living with Nee, so I don't want to give you the impression that I hate her.  What I really should be talking about is what she does.

She's what she calls a hunter.  She explained it to me, and it sounds like they basically finish the job that trackers start.  Trackers find people, hunters...well, hunt them down.  They're the ones who do all the dirty work.  It surprised me that someone as young as Nee would be doing that (she says that she's nineteen, and she almost looks younger than that), but apparently she's pretty good at it.  And then she showed me her knives.  She's...got a bunch of them.  Butterfly knives, switchblades, pocketknives...even hunting knives and kitchen knives.  She picked up a cleaver when she was showing them to me and twirled it around pretty damn expertly.  I don't think she's someone I'd want to mess with.  She seems to like me well enough, but I still don't feel that comfortable around her anymore.

So, yeah.  We basically just coexist.  She eats her sugary cereals, I eat Chex.  She watches anime, I block her out with music.  She goes out occasionally to try to make some new friends, I keep myself locked up in the apartment.  Admittedly, she really doesn't do much, but that's because she hasn't had assignments yet.  It's not a constant thing like hacking or tracking, but it's pretty intense when she does work.  And apparently, when the summer's over, she's going to have the time to be taking some college courses as well.

And I guess that's Nee in a nutshell.  She's annoying, but not unbearable.  Quirky, to be sure, but then again, so were Hyde and Caper, and I ended up really missing them.  So things aren't quite as bad as they seem.

  3. Princess Tutu is actually a surprisingly good show.

I do sort of want to be alone right now. I just need to clear my head a bit. Sorry.

  4. Japanese with subtitles makes sense. Why?
Same reason I perfer to watch French Stuff in French (with subtitles, yes), German Stuff in German and Anglo-Saxon stuff in English (etc. etc. etc.)
I have a distaste of dubbing, even when it's well executed, although I approve of it if the dubbed show has dialogue heavy with reference to culture or pop-culture of the original audience, with dubbing being used to replace those with references that the secondary audience will be familiar with.
Also, how is the title "Princess Tutu" gay? It's GIRLY, but since when does that equate with gay?
And she still doesn't make sense.

  5. Hmm, she sounds interesting. Could you maybe ask her how she came to be working for the faceless queen of broken hearts?

  7. To be fair, I watch most of my anime with japanese subtitles.

To also be fair, THIS LADY SOUNDS LIKE THE ABSOLUTE WORST. I took Japanese for four years, and when I see a person like this, I have to resist a great temptation to join Slender Man in order to get the power to murder them.

You have my goddamn condolences, Messenger. If I ever meet you, I'm buying you lunch. No one should have to put up with that.
